食 - Chinese Cookbook

Year: 2019
Services: Book Design
Role: Graphic Designer
Tools Used: InDesign, Illustrator

Project Description: Designed a visually engaging cookbook featuring 16 authentic Chinese recipes, curated from four major regional cuisines—Cantonese, Fujian, Sichuan, and Shandong. The visual theme incorporates traditional Chinese elements, with scarlet as the primary color, symbolizing celebration and cultural richness. The continuous line illustrations, inspired by Chinese knots, were used to reflect unity, heritage, and elegance.

Typography: A harmonious pairing of hand-writing font with elegant serif typeface to reflect both authenticity and readability.

Layout Design: Clean, balanced layouts that highlight both the recipes and accompanying cultural context.

Cultural Integration: Chapter dividers include regional dishes and short cultural notes to provide context to each cuisine.

Notes: Historically, Chinese cuisine has been categorized into four major traditions, which later expanded to eight in modern times. Each culinary style reflects its region’s unique geography, climate, natural resources, cultural history, cooking techniques, and way of life.
